Long and Short Reviews Weekly Blog Challenge | 07.22.20

Here we are on another Wednesday and our weekly blog challenge hosted by the lovely people at Long and Short Reviews. The topic: Character names in books I can't pronounce.

Since I couldn't recall the last time I had an issue with pronouncing a character's name, I thought I'd give a twist to this topic. What about the names of my characters? I write Scottish/Irish/Viking medieval romances and choose names that are ancient or to some might be difficult to pronounce. Trust me, even my editor has to ask. Or she'll give them nicknames and that confuses the heck out of me.

Here are a few of my characters' names from my stories:

Cinead

MacFhearguis

Tiernan

Ailsa (named after Ailsa Craig off the coast of Scotland)

Faolan

Niall (you'd be surprised how many mispronounce this name)

Siobhán

I'll stop here. With my new series, The Wolves of Clan Sutherland, I did research into Old Norse. The language is far easier than Gaelic, and I'm enjoying it immensely. You may call me crazy, but I love research.

And I must confess, if I came across a name of a character I couldn't pronounce, I'd look it up.

At least with my forthcoming release, Magnar, you'll be able to pronounce the names. If not, send me an email. :)
