Greetings from Mary's Tavern! It's all about sinfully, delicious chocolate for the month of February. There's so much to celebrate this month, including my anniversary next Friday to my knight. We both love chocolate--from cakes, cookies (my knight is a cookie monster), pies, candy, and hot chocolate. Do I indulge every day? Aye! Yet with only one piece of dark chocolate. Psst, we won't discuss how much I consumed over the holidays, unless you're going to share the same with me.
The beautiful copper cocoa pot was a gift many years ago. It makes the best cup of hot chocolate. Since I'm anxiously awaiting the premiere of the series, Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip With Sam and Graham on Starz, I pulled out my Jamie and Claire mug yesterday. After all, I'm a romance author and believe in love.
The recipe below is one I've used for years, and I've tweaked it many times. Feel free to do the same. And what happens when I've run out of my stash of chocolate? I always keep a supply of Keurig Hot Cocoa pods. Gasp! I can't imagine not having some form of chocolate in my pantry!
Mary’s Peppermint Hot Chocolate
2 cups whole milk
½ cup half and half
1 cup bittersweet chocolate, chopped
5 teaspoons sugar
Splash of Peppermint Schnapps
Combine the milk and chocolate in a small pot. Simmer on low heat until chocolate has melted. Add the sugar and still well. Let simmer on low heat for another five minutes.
Remove from heat and pour in your preferred amount of Peppermint Schnapps, if using. Serve in your favorite mug(s) and top with a generous dollop of whipped cream.
